Hello chess blog friends, the main event of the London Chess Classic 2014 began with one win and two draws - Michael Adams beat Fabiano Caruana, Vlaimir Kramnik drew with Viswanathan Anand and Hikaru Nakamura also drew with Anish Giri. The scoring pattern is 3-1-0 so, Adams is already in the lead with three points.

Players must make 40 moves in 1 hour 40 minutes, then all remaining moves in 50 minutes, with a 30 second increment throughout. 'Football' scoring will use used, with 3 points awarded for a win and 1 point for a draw. The Sofia-Corsica rules apply, so there will be no agreed draws without consent of the Chief Arbiter.
The two draws were entertaining though predictable. However, the Adams-Caruana game had its share of spills and thrills. Adams goofed up in the opening, but Caruana returned the favour and gave Adams a winning edge. The game became level again and soon Caruana was losing which he eventually did despite Adams missing a clear win. Finally, Adams won the game with solid technique square and fair.
Thursday round 2 pairings:
Anand - Caruana
Giri - Adams
Kramnik - Nakamura
Anand - Caruana
