Caruana beat Sergey Karjakin, runners-up at the Candidates 2014, after the Russian got tangled in time trouble and blundered away material. Gelfand, on the other hand, played steadily to fetch his first win after Dmitry Andreikin's doubtful opening play.

Leinier Dominguez was unable to make the best of his advantage and had to draw with Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Evgeny Tomashevsky and Alexander Grischuk went home with a draw as did Peter Svidler and Hikaru Nakamura.
