Hello chess friends, the Small Nations Individual Chess Championship concluded recently in Cyprus with IM Michael Wiedenkeller from Luxembourg not only winning the title, but also earning a seat in the World Chess Cup.
Wiedenkeller had to win the last round to win the title with at least three players tied while going into the last round. Igor Efimov was one of them who even beat Tito Kahn to keep his winning streak going. However, Efimov had lost the direct encounter with Wiedenkeller so he lost the title on tiebreak. Oscar De la Riva, who had led for most of the tournament was third.
The event was organized by FIDE, the Cyprus Chess Federation (KYSO) and the European Chess Union, with sponsorship from the Larnaka Tourism Board and the Municipality of Larnaka, and took place at the Larnaka Museum Historical Archives from April 22nd to April 30th. Full coverage of the event can be found at the official website, http://larnaca2014.fide.com, with results, standings, news and photo galleries.
