Defending National Chess Champion, Isuru Alahakoon of the Sri Lanka Navy successfully defended his national title for the third consecutive year at the 40th National Chess Championship - 2014 concluded at the Institute of Sports Science in Colombo 07 on 24th March 2014. The event was organized by the Sri Lanka Chess Federation under the direction of the Ministry of Sports.
Isuru Alahakoon is the Captain of the Sri Lanka Navy Chess team and showed a splendid performance throughout the tournament. He scored 10 points from 13 games. With the national championship to his credit, Isuru will now take part in the World Chess Olympiad 2014, which is scheduled to be held in Norway in August.
The victory has enabled Isuru to reach the 2100 FIDE rating level for the first time in his career. It is great achievement for the Sri Lanka Navy Chess pool under the chairmanship of Captain Udaya Dampage. The directives and blessings of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage has helped immensely the Sri Lanka Navy Chess pool to reign supreme in the chess arena. (www.navy.lk)
