Anand, Carlsen World Chess Championship 2013: All the Top News

Hello everyone,

The World Chess Championship 2013 is just about two weeks away and the chess fever is catching on Chennai - the venue of the World Championship Match between Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen. 

A host of chess tournament are being held in Chennai and several more are planned during the World Championship as well. Not only are there several events for all rating groups, men and women players, but also for school children. A district-level school chess competition is scheduled for November 7, will see 360 students shortlisted students from across the state of Tamil Nadu. 

The Tamil Nadu government has released about $4.7 million for the World Chess Championship. Some local chess events included 55,667 chess training programmes conducted across the schools in Tamil Nadu in August this year. This was followed by the school-level chess championship. After four qualifying rounds, 360 students were shortlisted from a total of 11,25,628 students who had participated.

India’s first IM Manuel Aaron is proud that his one-time student Vishy Anand will be playing his World Championship against Magnus Carlsen in Chennai where the maestro learnt the nuances of the game. “When I first saw Anand at the Tal Chess Club he appeared to be a slim kid with a squeaky voice with a flair for chess. He was attentive, obedient, regular at the classes (chess) and always had the inclination to learn more,” said Aaron.

  2. The excitement is just beginning. Do 85 rating points matter at that position in professional chess I think that's the most important question to ask!
