Alexandra Kosteniuk's Chess Blog for Daily Chess News and Trivia (c) 2013

Hi everyone,

Possibly excited by Vladimir Kramnik's win at the Chess World Cup 2013 allowing Sergey Karjakin to enter the Candidates 2014, the Russian Grandmaster was propelled to win the 67th edition of the Moscow Blitz Chess Tournament. The women's section was won by Daria Charochkina.

On September 1st the 67th Moscow Blitz Championship was held in Moscow park “Krasnaya Presnya”. FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and President of Moscow Chess Federation Vladimir Palikhata welcomed the participants of the championship. Previously the championship was organized under the auspices of “Vechernyaya Moskva” newspaper which is a partner of the event nowadays. Traditionally the event is held in open air whatever be the weather.

In previous years, the event has seen champions like Mikahil Tal, Tigran Petrosian, Vassily Smyslov, Yury Averbakh and Eugene Vasyukov. The list of chess stars that have won the event also includes the likes of Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Alexander Grischuk and Alexander Morozevich.

Despite the cold, nearly 150 chess players participated in the championship.
