Chess in Nigeria: Friends of Chess Tournament begins Today in Lagos

Chess Blog for Daily Chess News and Trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013

Hi everyone,

Four international and four Nigerian masters are among the 150 chess players who will take part in the Friends of Chase tournament, which begins today at the Chevron Center in Gbagada, Lagos.

Event coordinator Rotimi Dasaolu, who is also a coach with Team Lagos Chess at the last National Sports Festival, says registration was a huge improvement on the last edition.

International Masters set to attend are Fola Akintola, Odion Aikhoje, Dapo Adu and Bunmi Olape, while the Nigerian Masters, who represented the country at the last World Chess Olympiad, include Yinka Adesina, Nonso Oragwu, Femi Balogun and Bomo Kigigha.

"We are paying appearance fees to the International Masters as their presence will serve to motivate the younger players and also enhance the profile of the tournament which we are organising to keep the game alive in the absence of big corporate sponsored competitions," said Dasaolu.

The tournament, which ends on Sunday, will feature competition in six categories - FIDE, Masters, Open, Ladies, U-14 and U-10. (msn sports)
