Yuniesky Quesada Wins 2nd Washington International Chess Open 2013

There is lot of good chess news coming in about Latin American chess players. Here's another update: Cuban Grandmaster Yuniesky Quesada Perez emerged sole winner of the 2nd Washington International after concluding the event with 7,0 points from nine games. Quesada Perez earned 5000 USD for the effort.

The 2nd Annual Washington International Chess Open took place 6-11th August at the Rockville Hilton, 1750 Rockville Pike, Maryland, United States.

ment A Section was reserved for players rated over 2100 FIDE or 2200 USCF in order to ensure the possibility to earn norms. American players Daniel Ludwig and Michael Mulyar secured Grandmaster norms after sharing the second place with Israeli GM Ilya Smirin.

Chess players Aleksandr Ostrovskiy (USA) and Shiyam Thavandiran (Canada) have earned IM norms. Ostrovskiy completed all requirements for the title. The A Section had 61 participants and offered the prize fund of $22,000.

Section A final standings:1. GM Yuniesky Quesada Perez 2636 CUB – 7,0 (5000 USD)
2-4. GM Ilya Smirin 2663 ISR, IM Daniel J Ludwig 2479 USA and IM Michael A Mulyar 2389 USA – 6,5 (2100 USD each)
5-11. GM Fidel Corrales Jimenez 2587 CUB, GM Aleksandr Lenderman 2527 USA, GM Ioan Cris Chirila 2520 ROU, GM Ayram Abreu 2483 CUB, IM Darwin Yang 2480 USA, GM Mikheil Kekelidze 2470 GEO and GM Kida Sundararajan 2458 IND – 6,0 (750 each)
12-17. GM Daniel Fridman 2634 GER, IM Mackenzie Molner 2506 USA, IM Adam C Hunt 2430 ENG, IM Kayden W Troff 2428 USA (125 each), FM Luke Harmon-Vellotti 2399 USA and FM Samuel Sevian 2388 USA – 5,5 (900 both) etc

The B Section with a prize fund of $4,000 was reserved for the players rated U2201 USCF and U2200 FIDE. There were 14 participants.

Section B final standings:1. Scott Treiman 2123 – 7,5 (1500)
2-3. Tom Polgar-Shutzman 2061 and Matthew Shih 2033 – 6,0 (550 each)
4. Henning Ja Kjoita 2193 – 5,0
5. Carl Harmon-Vellotti 1959 – 4,5 (600) etc
