Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013
Hi everyone,
Hi everyone,
Local chess association and leading politician in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu have announced that they would host the World Chess Championship 2013 between Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen from November 6 to 26. A formal press release from Fide is awaited. The championship will be held for the first time in India. Last year, India wanted to host the event, but Russia won the bid and staged the event between Anand and Boris Gelfand. Indian politician and chief minister of Indian state Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa has said Fide president Kirsan Illyumzhinov had met her in 2011 with the proposal to hold the event in Chennai. This year, the Federation allotted the event to Tamil Nadu without going through the bidding process, she said.
Viswanathan Anand is a five-time world chess champion and World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen has just won the Candidates in London to earn the right to challenge him. (Further updates awaited)
