Rare Chess Board on Display in London at Fortnum & Mason

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013

Hi everyone,

Game on: The Standard’s Miranda Bryant, Harley the rabbit, centre, and pianist Jason Kouchak try out the chessboard.

A rare chessboard inspired by Alice in Wonderland is to go on display for the first time. The white gold gilded board — which features pictures by Sir John Tenniel who illustrated Lewis Caroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through The Looking-Glass — lay undiscovered for 100 years before being spotted at a house clearance two years ago, according to a Standard report.

From tomorrow, Londoners will be able to see it in an exhibition at Fortnum & Mason.

There will be a special “chess day” to encourage children to get involved in the game.

Concert pianist and chess fan Jason Kouchak will give lessons accompanied by a real life white rabbit called Harley.

The board is valued at £350,000 but owner Jake Fior has created a limited edition replica which costs £2,750.
