Sharjah Chess Clubs Moves to New Premises

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

Talk about a chess club in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and most people are quick to point out the Dubai Chess Club. The Dubai Chess Club has become a hub of chess activity over the last few years. It has been the central place for chess events - including an annual tournament - in the UAE and the region. There is another chess club now promoting the sport in the region. It is interesting to note that a special news release went out this week stating that the Supreme Council member and Ruler of Sharjah His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi on Sunday approved the new logo of the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club. The approval of the logo coincides with the opening of the Club’s new headquarters.

The logo, which was designed by Emirati artist Hisham Al-Mazloum, who is also the head of Arts Directorate at Sharjah’s Department of Culture and Information, is inspired by the UAE’s traditional cultural identity and features the barjeel, a local word for circular traditional wind towers, reflecting integration between its authentic old and modern values.

We hope chess continues to flourish and become popular in the Middle East region with the contribution of both the Dubai and Sharjah Chess Clubs.
