Alexander Fishbein Wins 31st Empire City Open in New York

The 31st Annual Empire City Open was held from December 28-30, 2012, at the New Yorker Hotel, 481 Eighth Ave at 34th St, across from Penn Station, New York, according to a Fide chess news update.

M Alex Fishbein finished in clear first with an undefeated 5/6 to earn $1200 for his weekend’s efforts. Fishbein led from the start, winning his first four games and drawing his final two to take the title. Just a half-point behind were GMs Zviad Izoria, Sergey Kudrin and Vladimir Romanenko along with Denys Shmelov who all collected $275.

Open section final standings:
1. GM Alexander Fishbein 2546 NJ – 5.0 ($1200.00)
2-5. GM Zviad Izoria 2610 NY, GM Sergey Kudrin 2605 CT, GM Vladimir Romanenko 2557 NY and Denys Shmelov 2499 MA – 4.5 ($275.00 each)
6-9. GM Maxim Dlugy 2594 NJ, IM Colomban Vitoux 2492 NY, FM Aleksandr A Ostrovskiy 2435 and FM Leif A Pressman 2320 NY – 4.0 etc

The event had 6 sections: Open, Under 2200, Under 1900, Under 1600, Adult Under 1300 and Junior Under 1300. The total prize fund was $10,000. For more details check out the tournament website.
