Breaking Chess News: Magnus Carlsen Wins 4th London Chess Classic Ahead of Vladimir Kramnik

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen has won the London Chess Classic 2012 as former World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik drew with Michael Adams. This meant, Carlsen's result in the last-round game with World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand would not affect the final standings. In fact, Carlsen would win the tournament even if he lost the game to Anand!

This was because Kramnik and Carlsen came to the last round with 15 and 17 points each. Kramnik had to win to at least draw level as the scoring is the 3-1-0 system in London. Kramnik finished the last round with a draw with Adams so managed a total of 16 points only.

Winning the 4th London Chess Classic means Carlsen's live rating is in the region of 2862.4 - the highest ever achieved by a human! Though, the next rating list is due January 1, 2013.

Round 9: Monday, Dec. 10th, 2012
Michael Adams - Vladimir Kramnik 1/2-1/2
Judit Polgar - Levon Aronian 1/2-1/2
Hikaru Nakamura - Luke McShane 1-0
Magnus Carlsen - Vishy Anand 1/2-1/2

The 2012 London Chess Classic was held in the beautiful Olympia Conference Centre from Saturday, December 1st until Monday, December 10th. Time controls were classical forty moves in two hours, then twenty moves in one hour and thirty minutes for the rest of the game. A win was counted as three points, a draw as one, and a loss zero.
