World Chess Championship 2012 Game 8 - Anand Beats Gelfand; Match Tied 4-4

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand called in the demolition squad on Monday.

He wrapped off the eighth game in his world chess championship match with Israel's Boris Gelfand in 17 moves. Vishy had got a similar advantage in the third game, but had let off Gelfand with a draw that day.

On Monday, Anand was in no mood to sit back. Vishy Anand used the pawn structure to his advantage and took on Gelfand's call for sharp play on the King side. Gelfand admitted in the post-game press conference that he miscalculated and missed a neat Queen manoeuvre by White.

Anand is back in contention with the eight games once again tied at 4-4. Tuesday is a rest day. The ninth game will be played on Wednesday, May 23. Gelfand will play White. On May 21, Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi, the Champion of Europe 2010, was the honorary guest. Grandmasters Alexander Grischuk and Alexander Motylev played a simul against children in the chess courtyard.
