I'm proud to be a part of India's rediscovery of chess: Viswanathan Anand

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

Newly-crowned World champion Viswanathan Anand has been the face of Indian chess for more than two decades and the five-time title holder said he was proud to be a part of India's rediscovery of chess. He was speaking at the press conference after the closing ceremony.

Asked about his role in giving a fillip to Indian chess, Anand said: "When I grew up there was not much chess scene in India but I was lucky that whatever chess scene was there, the centre was in Chennai. We benefited from the fact that the Soviet cultural centre was in Chennai.

"We had a bunch of enthusiasts who would come on Sunday and play blitz the whole day. They were also very committed, they would organise weekend tournaments and I used to play and with constant practice I started to become better.

"I am very proud that India rediscovered chess then. I am proud to have played a big role in that discovery. I could feel it because when I became world junior champion and then the Grand master, we could see that chess was certainly becoming popular in India.

"So, I am very happy that India was taking to chess again in a big way. Right now, we have a lot of depth both in men and women's game, a lot of people are taking part," he added.

Asked about his contribution to India's growth which coincided with his rising career, Anand said: "As for tying myself with India's growth that I am a little reluctant. You never know who is inspiring whom. But lets say, at least it happened almost at the same time.

"India had this big moment in 1991 after which economy started expanding vigorously, well lets just say that it all happened almost at the same time," he said.

World Chess Champion - India Twitter Trend: Is Indian Model Going to Strip for Anand Victory?

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

I'm a good
kid - I don't read tweets!

The Indian subcontinent takes cricket love to pretty manic heights and chess figures much less in the media unless, of course, if the news is about World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand.

Indian model Poonam Pandey was the talk of Indian media and twitter trends two days back for 'stripping' on twitter to celebrate the victory of Kolkata Knight Riders - a team owned by India movie superstar Shah Rukh Khan - in the Indian cricket league tournament just two days back.

The Indian twiterati is having fun this Wednesday after Vishy Anand won the 2012 world chess championship by beating Boris Gelfand.

Here are some popular tweets. With no ill-will intended, we celebrate the creativity of chess fans from India - particularly that Anand is seen with such good will that fans actually expect the model to 'cover up' for him!:

Angry Bombay Girl ‏@shadymumbai
Now that Poonam Pandey has removed all her clothes for Cricket ... For Vishwanathan Anand .. she might consider Wearing some for a Change

doctor at large ‏@doctoratlarge
Poonam Pandey puts on a saree to celebrate Anand's win

greatbong ‏@greatbongPoonam Pandey will take off her clothes for Anand also? Toplessalov ?

rajneesh kapoor ‏@MrMrRajneesh
Now that Viswannathan Anand has won the World Championship, Poonam Pandey must show all the Mating Positions.

Faking News ‏@fakingnews
I just hope Poonam Pandey doesn't post a pic to 'celebrate' Viswanathan Anand winning World Chess Championship.

Hi everyone,

Unruffled, steady on the board, the cool World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand retains his crown with a steady win over Israel's challenger Boris Gelfand in Moscow today!

Congratulations to Vishy Anand for his grand success. This is his his fifth world chess title - fourth in a row. Anand kept his head and stayed focused even as his challenger ran into time trouble and blundered to lose the second game. The final score was 2.5-1.5 in favour of Anand apart from the 6-6 tied score in the classical time-control games.

The first game of the tiebreaker ended in a draw in 33 moves before Anand beat Gelfand in the second game in 77 moves. The two of the remaining four-game rapid chess tiebreaker ended in a draw as Anand successfully defended his title.

This was 42-year-old Anand’s fifth World Championships title. He won his first world chess title in 2000 and then went on to win three in a row in 2007, 2008 and 2010. He has been the world champion since 2007. He won the 2007 title in a tournament format among eight players. In 2008 and 2010, he beat Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria respectively after the format changed to championship match between the defending champion and a challenger.

Israeli Chess Fans Include PM Benjamin Netanyahu - Anand, Gelfand World Chess Match 2012

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

A chess news report from Jerusalem states that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - an amateur chess player and an enthusiast of the game - actually followed Game 12 live of the Anand, Gelfand World Chess Championship 2012 on Monday!

Mr Netanyahu watched the game on a giant screen installed in a room in his office. He shared game 12 comments with Natan Sharansky, a former minister who used to be a promising chess player as a child.

The Israeli Premier had met Grandmaster Gelfand in March 2010 when he played a match against him and Natan Sharansky. A lot of amateur and professional Israeli chess players as well as enthusiasts also gathered at the centre of Israel to watch the match on a big screen. The two players are tied at 6-6 points after 12 games and the champion will now be decided in tie-breakers.

Special Chess Match in Leon in June - Topalov versus Vallejo Pons

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

Veselin Topalov and Francisco Vallejo Pons will play a friendly match as part of the tournament Leon 2012. It will be a six game encounter, with blitz games and Armageddon if needed. The time control is 45 mins + 15 sec per move semi rapid. The playing days are 8th, 9th, and 10th of June and games will be live with computer analysis at Chessdom.

Just recently we saw another classical mini-practice match between Aronian and Kramnik in Zurich. With the World Chess Championship cycle based on matches and mini matches, such practice games become more and more fashionable.

Topalov – Vallejo rules

1). The matches will take place in Leon from 08 to 10 June 2012 (both inclusive) with the following schedule:

Day 08 June 2012 Topalov – Vallejo 1st and 2nd Games.
Day 09 June 2012 Topalov – Vallejo 3rd and 4th Games.
Day 10 June 2012 Topalov – Vallejo 5th and 6th Games.
Drawings lots will be place on 07 June at 20,00 hours.

2). Two games per day will be played with the following schedule:
1st at 16,30 hours.
2nd at 18,40 hours.
There will be 10 minutes break among the games. Each player will have 45 minutes+15 secons/move for the whole game.

3). In a match of a draw it will be decided by a match. The match will consist of two games with a time-control 5 minutes per player + 3 seconds for every move played. In case of another tied result – there will be played a last “sudden-death” decisive game with a time-control 6 minutes for the whole game for the White-player and 5 minutes for the whole game for Black-player. The White-player will only need a victory in this game to win the tournament, whole the Black-player will win the tournament by just not losing that final decisive game.

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

The final game in the 2012 World Chess Championship has been played. The score is tied at 6-6. Viswanathan Anand and Boris Gelfand head for the first-time-in-history speed chess tiebreak to decide the top title.

Game 12 was much like the previous two games — the players got the Queens off early and let the game dribble down into a draw. There was excellent live broadcast of Game 12 at the official website. The 14th World Chess Champion, Vladimir Kramnik, was in the commentary box. Check out the complete analysis of the game with Chess King.

Game 11 is a Draw Too - Are We Headed to Tiebreaks?

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

Today’s penultimate game of the 2012 World Chess Championship between challenger Boris Gelfand and champion Viswanathan Anand ended in yet another draw. Materially at the end Black was a pawn up, which was offset by White’s Bishop pair with pawns on both sides of the board. Even the world’s strongest commercial chess program Houdini 2 Pro finds no way for either player to make headway. The match score now stands at 5.5. all, with one game left to play. See the analysis with Chess King and Houdini.

Marie Sebag Takes 'Chess Secret' to French Reality TV Show Secret Story' 6

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

Guess who is on French television reality show - Secret Story? It is Grandmaster Marie Sebag!

A lot of people in the English-speaking world know a similar show called 'Big Brother'. The 'Secret Story' principle is similar. The contestants are kept locked away for 10 weeks in a house, called "La Maison des Secrets" (the House of Secrets). All of the rooms are installed with cameras, except the toilet.

Each contestant has to conceal a secret. Everyone else has to try and discover it. If a contestant does, that contestant wins the jackpot of the contestant whose secret they have guessed. Each secret is worth €10,000. Each Tuesday, two contestants are nominated and put up against the public vote to be evicted on the Friday. The girls and boys nominate the opposite sex, alternating weekly.

So, what is Marie Sebag's secret? But, of course that she is a chess grandmaster and has won the French Women's Chess Championship! You can read about all the contestants and Marie's progress at the show website.
