World Amateur Chess R8: Oliver Johannesson of Iceland in Sole Lead

Hi everyone,

Iceland's Oliver Johannesson is leading after eight rounds at the 2012 Fide World Amateur Chess Championship in Port Carras, Greece. He has 7 points with a half-point lead over the rest. Four players have 6.5 points. 
 


Top round 9 pairings are: Tsakiris Haralambos – Johannesson Oliver, Akinci Muzaffer Ege – Moscotes Fernando, Reyes Rios Juan Camilo – Musiienko Danylo, Tqavadze Giorgi – Manelidis Savvas, Paetz Carsten – Liberman Alexander, Kafetzis Georgios -Bes Michal and Pertaia Enver – Ersoz Bartu.

In the Alexander the Great Chess Open,  white pieces dominated on the top four boards. GM Dejan Antic defeated the earlier leader GM Kivanc Haznedaroglu after a fine positional squeeze, while GM Petar Drenchev converted the extra piece into a full point in the game against Nikolaos Galopoulos.

GM Athanasios Mastrovasilis won against IM Rasmus Skytte and IM Malcolm Pein punished the risky opening choice of WGM Andjelija Stojanovic.
