Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012
Hi everyone,
It's going to be some time before your next chess opponent happens to be all metal and circuits instead of flesh and bones. But that's already a reality at the International Space Station. Check this story in The Voice of Russia!
Russian android to do space repairs, play chess
SAR-400 can be remotely controlled from Earth and can copy the movements of a ground-based operator. If the operator raises his right arm or takes a pencil and starts writing the robot will do the same. But it can also work in an autonomous mode and even make independent decisions within its software framework. Read furthere here.

Russian android to do space repairs, play chess
Russia will send its first android robot to the International Space Station. The SAR-400 will perform operations that are fairly simple, yet could pose a risk for astronauts such as unloading space cargo, screwing bolts or sealing cracks on the station’s outer surface. And during its free hours, it will entertain the crew by playing chess or checkers.

no thanks really
ReplyDeletei personally am of the opinion that one should focus on the board and not the opponent. so if opponent is to be a beautiful woman no problem if opponent is to be a machine no problem. chess is to focus on board. how you play otherwise with too pretty women around. thank you for printing my opinion ms chess queen. yours humbly fan. from far.
ReplyDeleteit would be interesting to play an android - quite like playing against my computer? It would be interesting to have Chess King in an android - wink. All the best for all your endeavors Chess Queen dear
ReplyDeletemy comment disappeared so writing again - i think any opponent would do chess is chess the varied the opponents the better :) good luck chess queen
ReplyDeleteno machines for me thank you. you never know when the android will get angry and get up and hit you - it won't hear fide rules right heh heh
ReplyDeleteNot much diff really it wld be some chess engine not in shape of laptop boring i would say. Human opponent brings excitement a special personality to chess.
ReplyDeleteit would be kinda crazy to have an android sitting across but the beauty of chess is that soon enough through the game you lose awareness of your opponent and you are lost in the game, the pieces on the board so guess eventually it wouldnt make a difference maybeonly for a few seconds after the arbiter starts the clock thats it.
ReplyDeletei prefer human opponents
ReplyDeleteI think the android would have a psychological edge. We humans are still not used to androids. Maybe in half a century when androids are more popular in regular life it would be easier to play chess with androids but as of now i would definitely feel a little on edge. cannot define it but it would be a little uncanny sitting before an android - what if he is reading my mind - uncharted territory. androids not for me when it comes to chess or anything.
ReplyDeletei prefer play with girl opponents
ReplyDeleteif i know who is controlling the android then its pretty much okay for me to play against it but if i dont know then i dont like the idea
ReplyDeletewill the android have chess king or any other chess software then i decide
ReplyDeletewhat are the fide rules on the subject? blitz would be difficult against an android but guess i could take one on in the long duration.
ReplyDeleteحیرت انگیز دنیا شطرنج چیمپئن
ReplyDeleteYu mean fide will allow androids in tournaments?
ReplyDeleteandroids are only computers in different shape. it would be boring to play one i think. humans bring more charm and psychological things to chess even if they have memorized opening 30 moves deep. humans better than androids as chess opponents
ReplyDeletehumans for me please
ReplyDeletewhat does the android have to say about playing humans?
ReplyDeleteany opponent is okay as long as i win
ReplyDeleteany opponent will do
ReplyDeletethe beauty of chess is that you get to play a variety of opponents - new countries new ideas new friends - so okay why not an android too. should be good fun. will he fetch me coffee after the game?
