Pouya Idani wins Khazar Chess Open

Hi everyone,

Here is the latest chess tournament news update via www.chessdom.com. The 10th Khazar International Chess Open Tournaments A (+2100), B (-2100), C (Women) & D (Youth U 14) were held from 29th February to 7th March in Rasht, Iran.

A total of 103 players from eight countries, including 12 Grandmasters, competed in the 11-round Swiss in Open A. IM Pouya Idani had a furious finish by defeating three Grandmasters, including the top-seeded Sergei Tiviakovin the last round, to take a clear first place with 9 points and 2676 elo performance. Idani earned $3000 for the effort.

Last-year joint winner IM Giga Quparadze had another outstanding result in Rasht and finished clear second with 8.5 points.

Russian GM Oleg Korneev started with five consecutive victories but then signed six draws in a row and landed on the shared 3rd place with 8 points.

Open B had 249 participants. Six players shared the first place with 9 points each.

Open C had 56 players. Kimia Moradi (Iran) finished first with 7.5/9 points.

Open D U14 had 113 participants. Top-seeded Aryan Bashiri is the winner with 9.5/11 points.

The prize fund was as follows: Tournament A -$11,500, Tournament B – $4050, Tournament C – $3100 & Tournament D – $1800.
