EU Parliament Endorses Chess in Schools Programme!
Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012
Hi everyone,
The European Parliament has endorsed the ‘Chess in European schools’ programme which was developed by European Chess Union (ECU) and the Kasparov Chess Foundation. Silvio Danailov, President of the European Chess Union, said the date March 13, 2012, would go down in chess history as the day when the game of chess was moved on to a higher level of recognition by society, “not just like sport, but also like a part of education in the modern world”.
The Written Declaration 50/2011 for the implementation of the chess in schools programme among the schools in the European Union was signed by 392 MEPs. Only 378 signatures were needed from the total number of 754 MEPs. The Written Declaration will now go to the EU Commission for consideration and any possible action, and, although this document is not legally binding, the Commission will know that there is considerable support for it.
