Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012
Hi everyone,
Hi everyone,
Here is an interesting piece of chess news from a country that doesn't have that much chess. Nice to know chess is becoming popular in Ireland. The article is datelined Dublin.
ReMake Sustainable Design Network will be taking over Meeting House Square Temple Bar on the 11th March 2012 to create a giant outdoor chess set made from waste materials.
‘Replay’, as the event has been dubbed, will challenge 30 designers to construct a giant chess set over the course of 6 hours which will then be available for public use.
Held in partnership with Meeting House Square this event is sure to cause in stir in the heart of Temple Bar. Onlookers will see the waste materials transformed before their eyes into an interactive game for all to play.
The giant chess set will be available for public use from 6 pm on Sunday 11th March in Meeting House Square and at various other venues after this event.
“We wanted to do something fun and interactive to get people thinking about re-using waste materials and that’s why we decided to create the giant chess board,” says Liz Fingleton of Klickity.ie, one of the founders of ReMake.
Creative Composites, a manufacturer based in Antrim, initially sparked the idea for the event. They solicited the help of Remake to find a new use for their factory offcuts. Due to the composite nature of materials the offcuts cannot be recycled. The Remake team love a challenge so they decided to find a new creative use for this material.
ReMake Sustainable Design Network is a community of Irish based designers. They aim to promote sustainable design practices by working with recycled materials. ReMake was established in 2011 with the help of RX3, The Market Development Group for Waste Resource.
RX3 have lent their support to make the RePlay event possible.
