Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012
Hi everyone,
What's a falcon got to do with a chess tournament? You will find out by the end of this news item! The first international chess tournament in El Haouaria, Tunisia, would take place from March 17 to April 4. GM Nigel Short will be a guest for the first part of the festival and will give a simultaneous exhibition on 30 boards, on 16 March.
The Mediterranean fishing village El Haouaria is situated on the most northeastern tip of Tunisia, Cap Bon. It is the land of sea, cliffs, oranges, history and falcons. Because of its many aspects of natural beauty it is one of the most attractive areas of the country and it is called 'garden of Tunisia'. It is a resting place for migrating birds and it is popular for the breeding of falcons and the ancient sport of falconry.
The 1st Chess Festival in El Haouaria is initiated by local chess player IM Njili Kamel who is already planning a further chess event to take place in June.
