Largest playing surface in the world? It's a chess set!

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011

Hello everyone,

This is the largest playing surface in the world when it comes to board games! It's a chess board! The board has been designed by Great Chesspectations as part of their 'The Minister of Sinister' series.
Built On Tradition ... Great Chesspectations is the only source for oversized and battlefield style chess boards. They say, "We took tradition and multiplied it." Their website is just being built. You can find them on Facebook and Twitter.

  3. I have played on some of their boards & it was awesome. They where based in AZ when I got a chance to play on a couple models. The large scale was more like commanding an entire war and not just a single battle. Contemplating a battle plan seemed like it would be impossible when I sat down for the first time, but once it began it wasn't even remotely as difficult as I had psyched myself for it to be. The genius is that even though the boards are larger & some are representitive of turain all the pieces still move the same. After my first game I was hooked. I started daydreaming about stratigies at work, in the car, and those moments before sleep. They moved their operations to NY so now I'm waiting for the boards to hit the shelves & the net. An iPad version would be awesome.

  11. Got a chance to see some of these boards coming out by Great Chesspectations. Took my breath away when I saw the board. Looks a bit itimidating, but I heard it plays well from people who have played it. Can't wait to get my hands on one. Hurry and get this out, Chesspectations!
