Hello everyone,

Fiji - a national awakening to mainstream chess - recently held their 2011 National Chess Championship. A report by Arin Kumar in Fiji Times Online states Candidate Master Calvin Prasad won the 2011 National Chess Championship on Tuesday when he finished undefeated in the tournament that was held at the Fiji School of Medicine's Pasifika Campus.

The tournament featured 10 competitors that included eight locals and two overseas based players. Kumar said he had been attempting to win this title for the past seven years.

"I had won the title since 2004. I managed to win other tournament in the past seven years except for this national title," said the 31-year old Suva based web designer.

He said he formed the team to help him prepare for this tournament this year and the hard work had paid off.

"This year we took a different approach and it is good to see that the concept has worked."

"We planned to win nine out nine and we did achieve that by beating the strongest field of players in recent times at this national tournament.

"Defending champions CM Manoj Kumar, who was chasing his fifth consecutive title, was always the biggest challenge and we overcame that as well. "It's been a very hectic and exhausting tournament and I have to thank my team and my family for supporting me throughout the year for this win."

Kumar said he will now start concentrating on the Fiji International Open and the Chess Olympiad in Turkey next year.
