Hi everyone,

The Women's World Chess Championship 2011 began in Tirana, Albania, on Monday with Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy taking on reigning champion Hou Yifan of China with white. The highest-rated Indian girl ever, Humpy will play a 10-game match with Yifan to decide the women's world champion for 2011-13. Yifan has won both the two meetings between the two though Humpy is a ratings-favourite. The last classical clash for the world championship was held between Xie Jun of China and Alisa Galliamova of Russia in 1999.

The 10-game match will see the winner as whoever scores 5.5 points first. In the event of a 5-5 tie, games of shorter duration will be played to determine the winner.

The total prize fund is 200,000 Euro which will be split between the players: 60% for the winner and 40% for the loser if the match ends within the 10 regular games. In case the winner is decided by tie-break games, the winner shall receive 55% and the loser 45%. The drawing of colors was conducted during the opening ceremony, on Sunday evening, October 13th in the Presidential Palace in Tirana. Albanian Chess Federation president Rezart Taci is also the CEO and sole shareholder of the company Taci Oil, the main sponsor of the event.
