Hi everyone,

The National Chess Federation Panama organised the 1st Panama Chess Open from 3rd to 7th November at the Salon Portobello, Centro de Convenciones Atlapa in Panama City. This event fills a gap in international tournaments in the Republic of Panama since the decade of 70′s, and the hosts are determined to establish it as a fixed annual tournament.

A totoal of 132 participants from 13 countries competed in the 9-round Swiss Open. 16 Grandmasters and 22 International Masters attended the event.

Former European champion Sergei Tiviakov defeated GM Alejandro Ramirez in the final round to take a clear first place with 7.5 points. Tiviakov takes home $2000. You can check the Official website and www.chessdom.com for more details. Here are the final top standings:

  3. This guy, Tiviakov, is totally butt hurt (read http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=7768). He just wrote a article in chessbase where he talks really negative about the Bogota tournament playing conditions (Apparently he is right on that). However, he has the guts to directly attack a fellow player, arguably STRONGER than he is (we are talking about Lazaro Bruzon from Cuba, an 2690 rated player), which also shows that Tiviakov is a cry baby and a bad loser. He even includes the game that Bruzon lost to Zapata in 25 moves adding that Bruzon was playing badly and didnt deserve the first place.

I remember a couple of years ago when he participated in the capablanca memorial in Cuba, and playing in the premier group (2nd strength after the elite) he became the punching bag for cuban players rated in the 2500-2590 range. Is that the reason why he is so butt hurt?
