Indian national women's chess championship R8: Gomes, Sachdev in joint lead

Hi everyone,

We've been tracking the Indian national women's chess championship 2011. Here is the chess news after Round 8. WGM Mary Ann Gomes defeated second seed WGM Padmini Rout and moved into joint lead with top seed International Master Tania Sachdev. The tournament is being held Chennai. Sachdev and Mary Ann Gomes now share the lead with 6.0 points, followed by Padmini Rout, Nisha Mohota, Eesha Karavade and Chandika Divyasree at 5.5 points each.


Mary Ann Gomes inflicted Rout her first defeat in the Championship. International Master Eesha Karavade came back into contention defeating Woman Grandmaster Meenakshi Subbaraman. Eesha is just half a point behind the leaders at 5.5 points.

In the upset of the day, Chandika Divyasree inflicted a defeat on defending Champion Woman Grandmaster Sowmya Swaminathan.
Three more rounds remain with Pratyusha Bodda, A G Nimmy, Chandika Divyasree and J Saranya in with norm chances.
