“As stated by the Guinness Book of Records, the classroom eliminations are already counted as part of participants for the world record attempt. Only 11 schools have provided figures for their classroom and school-wide tournaments, but the number has already reached 13,722 players,” said Abella.
The figure is expected to rise in the coming weeks as 109 public schools in Cebu City have yet to submit their figures.
CCSC and CCF said that the submission of the list of finalists who will play in the Grand Finals on Jan. 21 and 22 will be on Dec. 14. The organisers expect the schools to finish their local tournaments before that. The grand finals, which is dubbed the Cebu Chess Festival-World’s Largest Chess Tournament, will be held on the weekend following the Sinulog. The finals will have the top eight players from each school competing at the Cebu City Sports Center to determine who will come out as the Grand Champion.
However, players who were eliminated during the classroom and school-based tournaments will receive certificates that recognise them as part of the world record-setting attempt.
Abella said that to spice up the grand finals, they have added other contests. “Aside from the grand tournament, we will have a contest for the most beautiful and uniquely designed personal chess sets,” Abella said.
Development of any sport requires greater visibility and attempting world records is one such way. In this direction, it is nice to know that the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) and the Cebu Chess Federation (CCF) have already enlisted 13,000 players as part of their efforts to eventually hold the world's largest chess tournament ever.
World's largest tournament with 20,000 participants held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in December, 2010. It was led by world chess champion Vishy Anand.
CCF tournament director Roger Abella said they had now registered 13,722 players with most coming from public schools.
