Grand Slam Chess Masters Bilbao R6: Ivanchuk beats Nakamura, others draw

Hello everyone,

Vassily Ivanchuk is all engines go - full throttle. Coming into the second section of the Grand Slam Chess Masters, he began the Bilbao leg with a cool win over Hikaru Nakamura. Others drew their games.

The first leg of the Grand Slam was staged in São Paulo, Ibirapuera Park, from September 25th to October 1st, the second leg takes place in Bilbao, Alhóndiga, from 5th to 11th October. Tournament system: double round robin with six players over ten rounds. Time control: 90 minutes/40 moves + 60 minutes + 10 seconds/move starting with the first move.

    Wow.What a game and they say the Sicilian is all mapped and decided. But Ivanchuk seemed to be just going great. Hope he wins.

    The organizers of the 2011 Grand Slam Masters Final Sao Paulo-Bilbao wish to thank Ukrainian player Vasily Ivanchuk, provisional leader of the tournament, for his efforts, and his complete and utter willingness to resume the tournament today in Bilbao, after the unpleasant incident of which both he and his wife were victims in Sao Paulo and which detained them in Brazil too long to arrange their arrival to Spain. His efforts and those of the Final’s organizers finally paid off yesterday as he is already in the Biscayan capital to begin playing this afternoon in the second round of the tournament, one of the foremost in the world.

    Surely all engines go. Guess Ivanchuk has got the title because he can only lose it if he loses two games which is unlikely in the last four games. Come on Ivanchuk. We should have a world title three-way match anand gelfand and chuky.

    This scoring system is quite a lot of fun - Ivanchuk is making it look like the man among the boys. i wonder whats the standings situation in regular scoring.

    With this victory, Ivanchuk's first place is almost assured, in spite of four rounds to go. Who will be second now?

    Nakamura tweeted: "Not upset about losing today's game, but if time controls leading to these absurd blunders are more important than quality..." But then Ivanchuk had same time control?
