Interesting chess game by 'comeback chess master' Matthew Sadler! (updated)

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011

Hello everyone,

We found this nice article by IM Malcolm Pein taking a look at Matthew Sadler's win over Victor Mikhalevski on the way to winning the Oslo Open 2011. We liked the game and of course, Sadler is already the talk of the 'comeback themes'.

You might remember that Matthew is making an amazing comeback to professional chess after being away for almost a decade. He dominated the Oslo Open and won with a round to spare. Sadler had reached 7/8 and a 1.5 point lead before he crushed Russian GM Sergei Volkov in the last round. Two international tournaments, two outright first places, nineteen games unbeaten and about 30 rating points in the bank. There has rarely been a comeback like it. Sadler looks like going from his office desk to the world's top 100 in two giant leaps while simultaneously challenging Luke McShane for the title of world's strongest amateur player.

Here is one of Sadler's wins from Olso. He gradually takes over the entire board. You can look at the game in our game player with Pein's comments.

  1. There another example of how in chess you never really need to give up and everyone has their individual journey - the gelfands, the anands, the kasparovs, the saddlers and all the others.

  2. I wonder what made him quit chess and what inspired him to come back. Congratulations to the comeback champion. Always tougher than staying there and winning. What with computers having changed so much. Thanks for sharing Chess Queen.
