Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011
Hi everyone,
The latest chess news from Khanty Mansiysk is the two draws in the semifinals at the World Chess Cup. It's been a long journey for the four players to this stage. GM Peter Svidler versus GM Ruslan Ponomariov and GM Vassily Ivanchuk versus GM Alexander Grischuk. Understandably so, all of them might have been relieved to draw today actually. Only two people advance to the final now. Incidentally, both the Russians had White today. The Ukrainians have Black on Tuesday.
The tournament is taking place in the Ugorian Chess Academy in the very heart of Khanty-Mansiysk, which has hosted three previous World Cups: 2005, 2007, and 2009. The 128 participants hail from 46 different countries, and are playing for a total prize fund of US $1.6 million. In addition the first three finisher get tickets to the Candidates tournament in the next World Championship cycle.
Here are the game links via the official website of the two semifinal games that were played on Monday. There is a fantastic high-definition live broadcast of the games at the official website too.
