World Chess Cup Final: Svidler wins first game over Grischuk,

Hi everyone,



We are in the final of the World Cup of Chess in Khanty-Mansiysk. The first game was played today - on Friday. Peter Svidler won the game. It was a Kan Sicilian with Svidler trying a 'patented' confusing opening set-up that forced Grischuk into a time scramble. Meanwhile, for the 3rd and 4th place, the first game between Vassily Ivanchuk and Ruslan Ponomariov ended in a draw.




As you know, these are the last four players remaining in the 128-player knockout tournament that has given us such wonderful chess over the last few weeks. We are already wondering how to handle the withdrawal symptoms once the tournament is over soon.


But back to the present. Here are the nice games of the final and the match for 3rd-4th place via the official website. That's where they also have the fantastic high-definition live broadcast of the matches. No one we know has missed showing up for the broadcast!

    I think Peter will win this. Difficult to choose.

    It's a pity that one of these four players is going to go home without a standing. Well it has to be Ivanchuk or Ponomariov. Difficult to accept. Svidler is really in form. Think everyone must be betting on him.
