Hi everyone,
Here is some chess news from England. It's one of those chess news items that might not make it to mainstream chess media but you read it and smile at the romance of all those chess events held in some of the out-of-the-way corners of the planet - tucked away in serenity!

Keith Arkell won £600 for finishing top of the Ron Bruce Premier division at the Paignton Congress 2011 last weekend. The event has been held in the ballroom at Oldway Mansion for over 60 years now and Arkell (who lives in Paignton) topped the division for the third year in a row after seven days of high quality chess. Recently he has moved away from long end games in favour of unusual opening moves to reach quick and successful conclusions.

On the last day (September 10) he beat Dominic Mackie to secure the title, with Steve Berry of Wimbledon finishing in second place.

In the Rowena Bruce Challengers section, local junior Robert Thompson (Newton Abbot), struggled in the last two days of the competition losing both of his final matches, but still managed to finish joint top winning £217 in prize money. In the Minor division, veteran Dave Burt (Poole) rolled back the years to win the top prize, pocketing a cheque for £350.
