Six rounds have gone by at the 98th British Championships that are taking place in Ponds Forge, Sheffield, from July 25-August 6, 2011. Top seeds are Michael Adams, Nigel Short, David Howell and Gawain Jones, making this the strongest British national championship in history. The Championship is also hosting events for seniors, U2000, U1800, U1600, U1400, British U16, U14, U13, U12, U11, U10, U9, U8, the Major Open, Five Day Open (a.m. and p.m.) Weekenders and Rapid Plays.

After six rounds (Sunday was a rest day) top seeds Michael Adams and Nigel Short, together with Gawain Jones, are in the lead with 5.0/6 points and performances of 2700+.
The Championship games are held as seven hour sessions: 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from first move.

It's an amazing contest really. Really made the weather so wonderful. I am having fun. My kid is playing in one of the junior sections. It's never been this big before. British Chess Championships rock.
ReplyDeleteI think Gawain Jones is in good form these days. Of course Adams and Short are superb too. Guess it will go down to the ropes.
