Russian Chess Super Final: Peter Svidler wins despite last round loss to Morozevich

Hi everyone,

Congratulations to GM Peter Svidler for winning the Russian Chess Super Final 2011 with a fantastic performance. Despite losing to Alexander Morozevich in the last round, the grandmaster had already secured the title in the penultimate round!

The Super Final of the 64th Russian Championship for men took place August 7-15 (rest day on August 12) at the Botvinnik Central Chess Club in Moscow. It was an 8-player, single round-robin. The time control was 90 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 30 minutes to finish the game, with 30 seconds per move from move one. Vladimir Kramnik, Alexander Morozevich, Sergey Karjakin, Alexander Grischuk, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Peter Svidler, Artyom Timofeev and Alexander Galkin took part in the event.

Earlier, in Round 6 the Kramnik-Morozevich game was drawn but Svidler had beaten Nepomniachtchi, Karjakin had beaten Timofeev and Grischuk had beaten Galkin. 

The final standings had Svidler at 5 points, Morozevich coming in second with 4.5, Karjakin, Grischuk and Kramnik with 4 points, Nepomniachtchi with 3 points, Galkin with 2 and Timofeev with 1.5 points. You can access the official website at this link. Here are the Round 6 and 7 games. Enjoy.

    Congratulations to Peter Svidler. He did a Kramnik at Dortmund in Moscow. Duh.
