Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Darwin Laylo has beaten Chinese GM Xu Jun to lead after seven rounds at the Chairman Prospero “Butch” Pichay Cup chess championship being held in Subic Bay Travellers Hotel in Subic, Olongapo City. The 31 year-old Marikina City earned his well-deserved point to take his tally to 6.5 points in this 10-round tournament. The tournament includes 86 players from seven countries - 13 GMs and one WGM.
The No. 9 seed Laylo, who holds a FIDE rating of 2516 beat Xu Huahua of China, WGM Irine Kharisma Sukandar of Indonesia, Yu Ruiyuan and Wang Chen of China and countryman GM John Paul Gomez of the Philippines in the first five rounds of play. His draw came against top seed Georgian GM Merab Gagunashvili. In second place is Georgian GM David Arutinian with 5.5 points.
