Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011

Hello everybody,

Chess tournaments are getting more fun by the day as we have close finishes becoming so common. Just shows how beautifully strong the popularity of chess is becoming across the world.

Here is another such news: The Super Chess Open Nakhchivan 2011 - with prize fund of 66 500 USD - witnessed GM Anton Korobov defeating the consistent leader of the tournament GM Paco Vallejo and walking away with the first prize in the last round. That guaranteed a fantastic $10,000 first prize, among many strong players as Wang Yue, Zoltan Almasi, Eltaj Safarli, Gadir Guseinov, etc.

Korobov has won the national Ukrainian championship, Linares Open and several other events. The other big star of the tournament was the young 17-year-old from Spain Alexander Ipatov. He finished fifth along with Almasi and Vallejo and picked up his final 3rd GM norm.
