Going into the fifth round at the Thai Chess Open in Pattaya, there were four leaders with a perfect score. Then Grandmaster Nigel Short took the lead.
He beat Burma's only Grandmaster, Zaw Win Lay while Spain's Paco Vallejo was held to a draw by Abhijit Kunte of India. Now there are five players behind Short at 4.5 points.

Short, 47, finished third in the 2009 Thai Open and second in 2010. The Thai Open, with a first prize of 100,000 Baht, is being played at the Dusit Thani Resort and continues until Sunday, with round 7 beginning at 2pm local time on Friday. You can follow the games live here.
