Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011

Hi everyone,

Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta took things right down to the last round to win the Dubai Chess Open in the last round by beating Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi. Incidentally, Negi had led for much of the tournament.
GM Gupta, a former World Junior Champion, is now the first Indian to have won the Dubai Chess Open title.  Abhijeet finished the tournament on 7.5 points out of a possible nine to take home the winner's purse of $8000 and 17 rating points which will take him above the 2600 mark.
Negi was second on tiebreak from among four other players - Csaba Balogh of Hungary, Murtas Kazhgaleyev of Kazakhstan and Jon Ludvig Hammer of Norway. Negi, actually, just needed a draw for the title but blundered on the 27th move. Meanwhile, top seed Krishnan Sasikiran lost to Csaba Balogh of Hungary.
You can check all the final standings here.

The best result among the women was by WIM Veronika Schneider who took the 12th place after 11 grandmasters on tiebreak - also among 11 grandmasters with 6.5 points each.
