2011 Icelandic Chess Championship starting tomorrow
Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011
Hi everyone,
It's been 21 years since the championship was held for the first time. The last time it was in 1990. The Icelandic Chess Championship starts on Friday in the resort of Eidar, near the town of Egilsstadir.
Three Grandmasters who are among the top-10 players of Iceland are participating in the tournament.
The 9-round tournament's defending champion will be then 15-year old (and now GM) Hedinn Steingrimsson - a record unbroken since 1913.
Another former champion, GM Henrik Danielsen, from 2009 is also taking part in the event along with GM Throstur Thorhallsson, IMs Stefan Kristjansson, Bragi Thorfinsson and Gudmundur Kjartansson, FMs Ingvar Johannesson, Robert Lagerman and Gudmundur Gislaon, and Jon Arni Halldorsson. Eleven-time, and defending champion GM Hannes Stefansson, however, is not competing.
You can follow the live broadcast from 2 PM GMT at the official Icelandic Chess Federation website: www.skaksamband.is.
