Three-way lead at zonal chess qualifier in Dominican Republic for World Chess Cup

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011

Hi everyone,

We don't have chess news coming out of Cuba very easily or often. But here's some from Havana.

GM Lazaro Bruzon

Cuban Grandmasters (GM) Lazaro Bruzon and Leinier Dominguez, along with Mexican Manuel Leon Hoyos - all with eight points, share the lead of the Zonal 2.3 regional qualifying tournament currently underway in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Dominican Republic, which grants two tickets for the 2011 World Cup of Chess.

In the tenth round of the event on Thursday, Dominguez and Leon Hoyos tied in the top spot with Bruzon —who rested— after their victories against Salvadoran Hector Leyva and Dominican Lisandro Muñoz, respectively. The World Cup is scheduled for Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, from August 26 to September 21 later this year. The qualifier is being played using a 13-round single round-robin format.
