Women's World Chess Championship 2010 - A nice first round

Chess news and chess trivia blog (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2010

Hello Everyone,

All the chess players did their best in the first games of Round 1 at the Women's World Chess Championship in Antakya, Turkey. Of the 64 players, unfortunately, two couldn't make it to the venue.

Polish player Iweta Rajlich who was travelling with her husband and newborn had to skip the tournament because of the bad weather that shut down the Warsaw airport. They tried coming via Ukrainian city Lvov but the journey would have been too much for the baby. English player Jovanka Houska got a walkover. Australian player Arianne Caolli couldn't make it either so her Chinese opponent Ju Wenjun got a walkover.

Antakya (Arabic: انطاكية‎, Anṭākyä; from Greek: Ἀντιόχεια, Antiókheia or Antiócheia) is the seat of the Hatay Province in southern Turkey, near the border with Syria. In ancient times the city was known as Antioch and has historical significance for Christianity, being the place where the followers of Jesus Christ were called Christians for the very first time. The city and its massive walls also played an important role during the Crusades.

All the players played up to their rating strengths with some interesting draw results. Natalija Pogonina lost to lower-rated Baira Kovanova, E. Ovod beat higher-rated Shen Yang and Tatiana Shadrina beat higher-rated Elina Danielian.

You can find nice coverage of the event at www.chessdom.com, www.chessbase.com, www.chessvibes.com, www.europe-echecs.com, www.chess-news.ru apart from the official website. The link for the live broadcast of games is here along with a live video feed here. There is a separate live video feed for your iPhone here! You can go through all the games and analysis at any of these sites but here are a few interesting games.

Run the moves in our pgnplayer or watch in flash below. Enjoy.

  1. Too bad for those two girls who didn't make it. But what a great tournament.

    My daily prayer for you Chess Queen.

    For You Chess Queen I will post this comment every day so please don't delete it.

    Prayer for Victory
    A Psalm of David.

    JEHOVAH answer thee in the day of trouble;
    The name of the God of Jacob set thee up on high;
    Send thee help from the sanctuary,
    And strengthen thee out of Zion;
    Remember all thy offerings,
    And accept thy burnt sacrifice; [Selah
    Grant thee thy heart’s desire,
    And fulfil all thy counsel.
    We will triumph in thy salvation,
    And in the name of our God we will set up our banners:
    Jehovah fulfil all thy petitions.
    Now know I that Jehovah saveth his anointed;
    He will answer him from his holy heaven
    With the saving strength of his right hand.
    Some trust in chariots, and some in horses;
    But we will make mention of the name of Jehovah our God.
    They are bowed down and fallen;
    But we are risen, and stand upright.
    Save, Jehovah:
    Let the King answer us when we call.
