GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave

Hi Everybody,

French Grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave has won the 2010 European Blitz Championship. He was part of a 400-player field in Warsaw. He played a full day of 26 chess games (13 double rounds) to walk away with the title.

No, it wasn't easy. There were 52 Grandmasters and 293 rated players along with top Polish players like Radosław Wojtaszek while Vasilly Ivanchuk was top seed. Ruslan Ponomariov was leading initially but soon the title race narrowed down to Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Vladimir Tkachiev.

Vassily Ivanchuk was second. He started not too well but managed good wins towards the end of the tournament. Ruslan Ponomariov was third. You can check the official website here.

The tournament also included the world's strongest woman chess player Judit Polgar who finished a credible eleventh.

The French are catching up with the world. Look how far Almira Skripchenko went in the Women's World Championship.
