Tromsø, Norway to host 41st Chess Olympiad

Alexandra Kosteniuk's Chess News & Trivia (c) 2010

Norway beckons

Hello Everyone,

The announcement has been officially made. The 41st World Chess Olympiad will be hosted by Norway in the beautiful city of Tromsø. That will be in the year 2014.

Norway was selected over Bulgaria who had bid to hold the 2014 Olympiad in the city of Albena. The bidding process for choosing the venue was conducted over the last several days on the sidelines of the ongoing 39th Chess Olympiad. Norway was chosen on the basis of a majority vote.

Tromsø city is the ninth largest urban area in Norway by population. The area has been inhabited since the end of the ice age, and the Sámi culture is the first known culture of the region. Speakers of Norse, the ancestor of Norwegian brought their culture to the area during the migrations of the Vikings before AD 890, when Ohthere's settlement existed to the south of today's Tromsø.

The 40th Chess Olympiad will of course be held in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2012. Do you remember our previous post on that? (About the logo and Olympiad history?)
