One of my resolutions for 2010 is to continue to promote chess as much as possible. Well I started the year with a bang: on January 1, 2010, I was on national Russian TV, in front of millions of spectators!
I had been invited by one of the top TV programs of the year on the top Russian TV channel, the yearly Russian Music Oscars, in Russian called "Zolotoi Grammofon" (Золотой Граммофон). I was to hand the Oscar to popular singer Stas Pekha (Стас Пьеха). The event took place in the enormous Moscow Kremlin Music Theater, with thousands of spectators (the creme de la creme of Moscow), and also broadcast on TV all across the 11 Russian time zones.
The part where I appear is between minutes 3 and 4 of the video. The rest of the video is a 9-minute pot-pourri of some of the singers who participated in the Oscars (the whole video is about 2 hours), all the singers are extremely famous in Russia. The video of course is in Russian, so I will tell you what is said in the part where I participate. I am introduced to the public as the women's world chess champion, a combination of beauty and intelligence - the host says that :-). Stas is said to love the game of chess very much, I congratulate him for giving such happiness to people with his songs. Then the host asks me what a man should do to attract a beautiful lady chess player. I answer that I know for sure what a man should not do, and that's not beat me at chess, to which Stas said he would lose to me, and the host says he never had any doubt about that and everybody laughs.
That's what chess needs: Chess in the media with a positive image, the image of a wonderful game that helps people become smarter, the image of a game played by beautiful and intelligent people.
If from seeing me on that show some parents decide to send their kids to chess school, or decide to teach them the wonderful game of chess, I will have fulfilled my mission, the one to show the world that... Chess is Cool!
Again, let me wish you all a wonderful New Year 2010!
